Introduction to UPSC Preliminary Examination
The UPSC Preliminary Examination is the first stage of the Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). It serves as a screening test to shortlist candidates for the next stage — the Main Examination. The Prelims test a candidate’s general awareness, analytical ability, and aptitude through objective-type questions.
Structure of the Prelims Examination
The Prelims consists of two compulsory papers conducted on the same day:
Paper I – General Studies (GS)
Total Marks: 200
Duration: 2 hours
Type: Objective (Multiple Choice Questions)
Purpose: To test knowledge of current events, Indian history, polity, geography, economy, environment, and general science.
Qualifying Nature: Marks are counted for merit to qualify for Mains.
Paper II – CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test)
Total Marks: 200
Duration: 2 hours
Type: Objective (MCQs)
Purpose: To evaluate comprehension, logical reasoning, decision-making, and basic numeracy skills.
Qualifying Criteria: Candidates must score at least 33% (66 marks) to qualify.
Key Features of the UPSC Prelims
Conducted once a year, usually in May or June.
Negative marking: 1/3rd marks are deducted for every incorrect answer.
Both papers are conducted on the same day in two sessions.
Objective in nature, but demands deep conceptual clarity and wide coverage.
The marks of Prelims are not counted in the final merit list — it’s only a qualifying stage for the Mains Examination.
