Introduction to the UPSC Interview (Personality Test)
The Interview or Personality Test is the final stage of the Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). It is designed to assess not only the candidate’s knowledge, but also their personality, attitude, communication skills, and administrative potential.
Candidates who qualify the Mains Examination are invited to appear before a UPSC Board of Examiners in New Delhi. The Interview carries 275 marks, making the final merit total 2025 marks (1750 from Mains + 275 from Interview).
Purpose of the Personality Test
The UPSC Interview is not a test of knowledge, but of character and temperament. It aims to evaluate whether the candidate possesses the qualities expected in a future civil servant, such as:
Clarity of thought and balanced judgment,
Honesty, integrity, and moral courage,
Leadership qualities and empathy,
Awareness of current national and international issues,
Ability to remain calm and composed under pressure.
The questions asked can range from current affairs, hobbies, and optional subjects to situational and opinion-based topics. The Board observes the candidate’s confidence, reasoning ability, and decision-making approach throughout the interaction.
Structure and Duration
Conducted at the UPSC Office in New Delhi.
Duration: 20–40 minutes on average.
Panel: 5 members (including the Chairperson).
Mode: Face-to-face interaction.
Marks: 275, added to the Mains total for final ranking.
Preparation Strategy
Preparing for the UPSC Interview requires self-awareness, confidence, and a deep understanding of one’s DAF (Detailed Application Form).
Candidates must:
Revise current events and government policies,
Be ready to discuss their academic background, hobbies, and home state,
Develop clarity and balance in expressing opinions, and
Practice mock interviews for better communication and body language.
